New Musical Instrument Category

First Accredited Senior Appraiser- Musical Instruments-American Society of Appraisers

For the first time in 75 years, the American Society of Appraisers ASA has established a category for musical instruments. The 17 billion dollar Music Products Industry and the ASA will work together to have correct valuation for musical instruments – Brass, Fretted, International, Orchestral, Percussion, Sheet Music, and Woodwind musical instruments and their related accessories. A Certified Appraisal is based on actual comparable sales and is a written legal argument of the value conclusion, similar to a Real Estate Appraisal. Due to the IRS ruling in 2006 of IRS standards for “Qualified Appraisals” this will open up the possibility of new careers across the nation for musicians.

Rebecca Apodaca, President/CEO of A & D Music Incorporated, started this process in 2006 with the support of the National Association of Music Products industry NAMM, President Joe Lamond, the National Association of Professional Band Instrument Repair Technicians, NAPBIRT Executive Director, Bill Mathews, and the ASA Board of Governors. With a degree in music and a Certification in Musical Instrument Repair, Apodaca has owned A & D Music in Orange County, CA for over 30 years and has been repairing instruments for over 50 years. Through the University of California, Irvine Extension Appraisal Studies of Fine and Decorative Art, she graduated in 2007. Apodaca says, “This is a great merging of two industries.” Joe Lamond stated, “I hope to see every music store in the nation associated with a Certified Appraiser.” NAMM will be hosting its convention this month in Anaheim.

15 years of appraisal experience, Apodaca has earned her Accredited Senior Appraiser designation. She has already appraised the second solid-body electric guitar in history; set values for an instrument for an artist honored by the Library of Congress, instruments donated to museums, instruments for Estate Settlements, celebrity musicians, Insurance coverage and claims, possible sales and for inventory of a bankruptcy. Apodaca has been penning a monthly article for a music trade publication, Music & Sound Retailer Magazine called “Appraisal Scene Investigation,” ASI.
